Presidents Project ~ Guide Dogs for the Blind
Saturday June 10th 2000
Shipley Lions provided the Casino equipment and Croupiers, Branshaw Golf Club the room and Supper, so the scene was set for an enjoyable evening helping raise funds towards the Presidents Project for this year, Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Before the evening got under way the President, Lion Edward Walters and his good lady wife Lion Julie, presented a cheque for £2,000.00 to Diana Hawley the area Fundraising Co-ordinator for the Guide Dogs, this makes more than 38 dogs sponsored by Keighley to date.
Here we can see Lion Edward and Diana having just presented the cheque. Diana is thanking Lions and giving a short response.
As is tradition when sponsoring a dog, the association then presents a framed photo of the previous dog sponsored by the club, which is normally given to the serving President, however this year Lion Edward decided to then present the photo to Lion Julie as the photo looked like the adopted dog they recently lost. Although the good news is that another retired Guide Dog has just been given into their safe keeping, although judging by the photo is still a little shy.
The night got under way and everyone starting betting like it was going out of fashion, thankfully it was just play money, phew!!!
Most memorable bet of the evening had to be Lion David Ogden, who walked upto the Roulette table, put one bet of £10,000 on number 2 black, and walked away with £1,000,000 after it came up. The photo shows Lion Maureen Verity of Shipley Lions paying some serious money out, with husband, Lion Brian in the background trying to think of ways to fix the wheel!
A gaggle of girls getting the upper hand of the distressed croupiers at the Pontoon table.
With the Pie and Pea supper and a quick game of 'Play your Cards Right' the time came to divvy up (a technical term for counting your winnings) and the overall winning gent was Lion John Sharples with Grace Saxby taking the honours for the Ladies, Grace can be seen in the centre of the above picture giving it large with the verbals.
Thanks go to Shipley for the Casino evening and Branshaw for once again putting up with us and laying on the supper, not forgetting all those that turned out helping raise more funds for the Guide Dogs ongoing project.
