KEIGHLEY
LIONS CLUB
Race Night for Crossroads
Junior Football Team
March 2000
Keighley Lions received a request for help, from a local junior football club in Crossroads which is on the way from Keighley to Halifax, at the junction to Haworth.
Their problem is the removal of pitch facilities due to the closure of a local school, brought about by the education re-structuring programme of Bradford Metropolitan Council. The answer is to purchase some land and build their own pitch.
Now we are committed to assisting youth projects in our area, but direct financial help would have meant probably £200 up to a maximum £300 pound, however we suggested the possibility of hosting a Race-night for them, which seemed to be a good idea.
This was done and with our help and equipment, the total raised was in excess of £800 on the night, plus an enjoyable evening all round. A bonus to our charity account was the fact that no money was taken out, yet we helped them raise 2 to 3 times what we would have donated to their project.
Ready for the off, with Pat Anforth, Lion Josie Clark and Lion Simon Kinsey in the background operating the Tote, Lion Keith Marsden acting as Jockey and President Lion Edward Walters calling the shots.
Part of the audience/punters waiting for that first race to get under way, and,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
They're off!!! and round the first turn, its Lucky Lady out of Stud just by a nose from No 3 Take the weight off by Park and Ride, coming up in the rear Bottoms Out by Ivor Mooney.
Lion Keith was assisted in his
duty as Jockey by Keighley's latest signing, from Silsden, Lion Steve Vickers.
The Tote was also joined by Lion 1st Vice Avril Emmerson, Lion Allan Clark and
Lion Julie Walters.
A Good night was had by all including the working Lions, and at the end of the evening the Juniors were £830ish better off towards the goal.
If you would like, or know
someone who would like or benefit from one of these Race Nights then Contact
Lion Allan Clark on e-mail abje1@legend.co.uk
or any Keighley Lion.
The fee for holding the evening which goes in its entirety to our Charity
Account is £120, for which you will receive a pack containing all you need to
get the show on the road approximately 1 month before the event, plus the
Keighley Team bringing all the equipment and running the evening for you.
Entrance cost can vary depending on supper arrangements and numbers expected,
plus whether you have to pay for the room. But assuming you charge £3.00 per
person (with room free) which includes Pie & Pea supper, and you can get in
excess of 80 to turn up on the night, then with the proceeds from Entrance,
Tote, a half time Raffle and selling the Horses plus the last race as an auction
race, then you would be looking at an expected £600 plus clear profit on the
night for your project.
We are willing to travel within a radius of 40 miles from Keighley or by negotiation on further distances.
